What to Bring
Things You'll Need to Play
- Money for game dues. First-timers, staff, and full-time monsters play for free. Everyone else is required to pay their game dues. For more information, see Fees & Discounts.
- Costume(s) and make-up. Period attire is required. Additionally, if you're playing a non-human race, you'll be expected to adhere to your race's costuming requirements, which may or may not include make-up. If possible, try to bring more than one costume in case the other is damaged or soiled.
- Boffer weapons, armor, and/or shields. These will need to be inspected and approved by a prop marshall at check-in.
- Other props, such as cabin decorations. These are not necessarily required, although they definitely help to distinguish your character and flesh out the game world.
- Small flashlight or glowsticks. Although not necessarily required, a portable light source can come in handy. Make sure your character has the ability to create light or you won't be able to use it in play.
Things You'll Need Out of Play
- White headband. You'll need this whenever you need to go out of play.
- Sleeping bag or bedding. A good rule of thumb is to pay close attention to the weather forecast for the weekend of the event and pack more bedding and blankets than you think you'll need.
- Food and drink. Although some other participants may offer food, likely for a fee, meals are not included in your gaming dues and food is not guaranteed to be offered at the event. Always bring enough food to last you through the entire event. Note that there are refrigerators, stoves, ovens, dishes, and utensils available for player use at games in Umstead State Park, but not microwaves.
- Medication. If you have any prescription or other medications that you may need, be sure to bring them.
- Garbage bags. You're responsible for cleaning up your own mess. Players who fail to clean up after themselves will be held in violation of the Code of Conduct and may be subject to disciplinary action.
- Normal clothes. Particularly when you're going to and from the game, costumes are not recommended. Be sure to bring a set of ordinary clothes for such occasions.
- Toiletries. Toilet paper, face wipes (for makeup), soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, washclothes, towels, etc.
- First aid kit. Although a first aid kit will be available for medic use, it's never a bad idea to bring your own for minor injuries that don't require a medic's attention.
- Paper and pencils. Although not required, having something to write on often comes in handy.
Recommended Seasonal Items
- Bug repellant. Particularly during the summer months, bug bites can spoil your day and cause real health problems.
- Chapstick.
- Sunscreen.
- Thermal undergarments. Events during and close to winter can get very cold. As with blankets and bedding, always pack more than you think you'll need.
Prohibited Items
Some items are specifically prohibited by the game rules and/or site policies. So much as bringing these items to the game is grounds for disciplinary action. Prohibited items include:
- Alcohol. Many game participants are below the age of 21, and intoxication is not conducive to a good game.
- Real weapons. This is a game of fantasy combat. Weapons intended for decorative use or out-of-game utility may be allowed with staff approval.
- Guns. Even if you have a permit to carry them, leave them at home.
- Illegal drugs. Illegal activities are strictly prohibited at game events.
