Anomaly Study

Weylyn was sitting at the edge of the crater of the former paladin camp. The odd portal in the second inner crater continued as it had since it's creation several Mests before. The kitsune was currently sketching the odd sight, though occasionally he'd toss a small stone into the anomaly only to watch it disappear like all those before it. He'd write down something in a small book and go back to sketching.

Poppy noticed the kitsune near what used to be the paladin camp. She fluttered over to approach him "Hey Weyl...... Holy shit. What in Etejeril name happened here?" The fea said her eyebrows knitting together as she watch the kitsune throw another rock.

Weylyn's ears perked up and he turned around "Oh hi Poppy." He looked back to the strange sight. "Um.. well... we didn't know how to disarm the warp crystal bomb that was placed at the tower so we dragged it over and dumped it in here to contain any blast... This was what was left after it went off." He nodded to the anomaly and tossed another pebble that also disappeared before it could touch it. "Nothing gets through, but it doesn't appear to be damaged it just... disappears."

Silaine overheard Weylyn's remarks as she made her way toward the crater rim. She had wanted a better look at the destruction in the daylight, and apparently he had had the same idea.

"Hello Poppy, Weylyn," she greeted the pair. "They just disappear you say? Have you tried tossing something attached to a cord, to see if you could pull it back?"

"Huh how odd... any idea where they came from" she said as she watched the ulf toss the stone again.

"Hello Silaine." She chirped cheerfully. "I was think a simlar thought as well, and then after that perhaps we can get a live subject to venture through.."

Weylyn nodded "They were created in town actually. The attacker, who we still don't know. Robbed one of the local mines for the warpstone. Bought the fertilizer, sulfur and saltpeter for the explosives, and experimental golem parts for the delivery method, they put them in golems for a guided self defending bomb..." he sighed "Someone spent alot of time planning this attack. And to make matters worse with drugs and head trama they made any witnesses forget their attacker..." he finished.

"I've thought about it, but I was holding off on that for a bit. I wanted to get a control first." He said standing up "But I suppose this is about as far as I can get with this."

Silaine turned to Poppy. "This bomb was set at the tower. We were able to stop the golem, but not fully deactivate the bomb. Luckily, that was enough to be able to get it here and let it explode where it would do no immediate damage. There were 2 other bombs, one at the nexus, and one at Avaren's Warren. The nexus was saved, but the Warren was not."

Silaine conjured up a roll of twine and, finding a small stick, began tying the end of the twine to it. "Maybe if we can figure out the nature of these portals, we can undo the damage. Or at the very least, find the Bayard who made those bombs." She finished thing and preferred the twig to Poppy. "Care to chuck it in and see what happens?"

Poppy eyebrows furrowed together. " Intresting so whoever said these off is not a fan of Avaren, Banekeril or Muralakrum... possibly." She said.. "Odd that they targeted the tower though."

"Sounds like a good plan to me, Silaine." Poppy said as she made a light nod. She took the object from her and gave it a good chuck into the portal.

Weylyn shrugged "Depends on your point of view. The tower could be argued as a temple to Thareon, as a repository of knowledge and magic. Which would put it in line with the attack on the nexus." he pointed out

Silaine tugged gently on the end of tbe twine to see if there was a response. "So you think the attack was primarily motivated by religion? That is, if we interpret the Tower as a temple to Thareon. What I'm most puzzled by are those pieces of paper which allowed us to figure out the locations of the bombs. Clues left by an unknown helper? Or the ravings of whoever created the bombs in the first place?"

"Mhmm good point Weylyn." She said turning to Silaine. "I am think so, I am not sure how else to tie in the attack on the Warren with the other two. Espically when there are not may followers of Avaren in town, so it not like they have a super strong presence." "Puzzle pieces?" The fae said her eyebrows knitted together in confusion

Weylyn nodded "At every location we found a note with a bit of a riddle on it that presumably gave a clue to how to deactivate the thing and were it could be found... rather helpful of a saboteur." the kitsune explained.

Silaine looked at the portal, shifting and warping continuously. This magic was no where near her natural expertise, and she had only just begun her explorations of the knowledge available in the Tower library. She sighed heavily in resignation. "I'm not afraid to admit I can't make anything of this portal, and my string doesn't seem to be doing anything yet. Do you two or any of the other docents have expertose in this kind of magic? Maybe we should for help from the Tower."

Poppy took a deep breath before letting out a puff of air. "Not really I never messed much with wizardry or portal work.... Malkonius might though?"

Malkonius arrives at the crater, interested in seeing the aftereffects of what almost destroyed the tower.  He's pleased to see his fellow docents already investigating the situation.

"I'd be a bit careful around an anomaly like that if I were you.... that is, unless you don't mind becoming an Aetherborn." he says with a sly wink.
"At least the anomaly that originally chewed me up and spit me back out looked somewhat similar to this.  In any case, I've seen what it did to Peleus when he managed to ruin the bomb at the Nexus Ruins.  Poor man saved us all, but suffered the bomb's effects entirely on his own.  We found him some miles away, dead.  It is made from warp crystal after all - it's main thing is teleportation.  I'm sure if you went looking that you'd find the objects you threw in there scattered about somewhere within the borders of Jastrey."

As silaine pulls at the rope it comes freely but where the rope and object entered the anomily the rope is cut perfectly and unnaturally clean.

Weylyn chuckled "Speak of the Fiend. Greetings Malkonius. If only it were that easy. Still if that's all we had to do maybe it wouldn't have been as bad a situation... but it would still bring up the matter of what our attacker hoped to gain by relocating the tower, warren and nexus."

As the rope was accidently pulled out and completely clean cut the fox raised an eyebrow "Well that's an interesting outcome... Might not be as ..." he chuckled to himself before continuing. "Cut and dry as we wanted."

"Those structures were too large to be simply moved, so they would be destroyed in the process, such as what happened at the Warren.  That, or organic matter is handled somewhat differently and is just killed when moved."

Malkonius shakes his head, still guilt-ridden that he was unable to keep the Warren from being eradicated as it were.

"Same as I mentioned with your objects you just threw in.  If you go looking, I'm sure you'll find bits and pieces of rubble from the Warren scattered about."

Silaine reeled in the twine and looked closely at the end. "Interesting. It's almost perfectly severed, an extremely clean cut." Looking around at the crater, she scans for any nearby debris that seems to have a similarly unnatural edge, as if it too had been cut by the field.

"Malkonius, with other warp portals, do they also cut a rope or object that crosses the border?"

Poppy chuckled at the end of the string. "Huh well then, soooo hypothetically we could toss an object in it and locate it somewhere else on the shard?" "Sooo how you think we close this Malkonius? You think?"

Malkonius looks to Silaine and nods,

"Yes, it would be safe to assume that the other portal does the same, though calling it 'cutting' is a little too simple.  It is teleporting anything that goes through it away, the result seeming to be a clean cut on the end of something that hasn't gone through."

He then turns to Poppy,

"You likely could find the object elsewhere on the shard, but I can't say whether or not it makes it there in one piece.  It could be stripped into tiny fragments and end up in multiple places for all we know.  Think of this anomaly like a portal, except a very unstable one.  As for closing it... I wish I knew an answer.  My best guess would be that throwing a well attuned lodestone into it might stabilize it long enough to close it normally, but I have my doubts.  I have one other idea, but I'm going to have to consult with Thareon and think on it before taking action."

Weylyn glanced at the former dwarf. "Well... we could always have someone attune to item and then use a locate spell on it after we send it though, that'd be enough tot tell if it's teleporting the whole thing or if it's breaking apart immediantly after crossing the threshold into the anomaly." he suggested.

"It's worth a shot, Weylyn.  If anyone has something they are willing to send through as a test they could try it."

Althena walked toward the crater where once was the paladin camp.  She had heard that a similar bomb as had destroyed Avaren's Warren had also destroyed the former area.  She was curious, and needed to see if the anomaly at the former campsite was similar to the one in the Temple District.  She hesitated at the sound of voices, tipping her head slightly to listen in. Satisfied she recognized the voices ahead, she stepped to the clearing, taking a position beside Malkonius, bending slightly forward to stare into the crater.  Turning to look at the scholars gathered about, the Ixifar healer asked, "Have you managed to figure these out?"

"I haven't confirmed quite how these work yet, unfortunately.  I'm only led to believe what they do based on what happened to Peleus when he ruined the one at the Nexus Ruins.  It seems that anything that can fit though the anomaly will be torn apart and relocated to another point on the shard.  Weylyn came up with a decent idea of testing this by locating an object we send through to find out if it does reappear, either in pieces or whole."

Althena stepped away from the edge of the ruined site, listening closely as Malkonius explained their procedure.  She nodded slightly, turning her gaze back to the crater.  "I am pleased that we have some of the best thinkers of Jastrey," she raised a hand to indicate her friends gathered, "working on this problem. I admit I have not the knowledge nor resources to research or come up with an answer, but if you think I can be of assistance, I would be more than happy to do so."

Weylyn nodded greeting to Althena. "Thank you for the offer. At the moment we're only doing some preliminary studies but if we discover anything you'll naturally be the first to know." He told her since the kitsune  knew the first of avaren had a more vested interest in the resolution of this anomaly than most in town.

"As far as sending something though. Maybe we try with objects of varying degrees of toughness. It might be worth cataloging just how strong these forces are." He tapped his notebook  "we could always start with some paper, and work our way up to adamant. I'm sure there's some ore around in my room somewhere for an infusion." He offered

Malkonius visited the crater left by the explosion late at night, studying the event further - just as he had for the last several nights.  Finally, he took one last look at the anomaly, and then angled his gaze towards Avaren's Warren.  A tear slid down his face, which he quickly wiped off, finding his resolve.

From his pouch, he produced a small symbol of Thareon, made of iron.  He stood it up straight in the dirt close to the anomaly.  One quick nod, and he started making his way back to the Tower for some rest.  Tomorrow, he is to visit the former Warren, and see what could be done about it's demise.
