投獄天狗 (Tōgoku Tengu) - Part 3: 天狗の漁撈 (Tengu No Gyorō)

Recently, a span has opened to the secluded empire of Vostour. The small fishing village of Tsuri, along the northeastern coast, has come under recurring attacks from Tengu! Many of the inhabitants have already fled or perished fighting the evil spirits...

Story Notes

Prelude: Run Tōgoku Tengu - Part 2 at some point before Part 3. It will introduce players to the village of Tsuri and the NPC Yorimatsu.

[Old empyrean/Yorimatsu]: Read as appropriate based on whether the party knows Yorimatsu's name.

The party arrives in the village of Tsuri to help fend off the Tengu. During the combat, an Empyrean named Yorimatsu will join them. Depending on how well the party does, they may be able to overcome the forces of the Tengu before Yorimatsu is fully corrupted by them. Afterwards, the party may be able to get some information from Yorimatsu regarding the Tengu and their origin and motives.

Tengu: Instruct your monsters to tell you if they were slain by Weylyn or NPC Yorimatsu. Slaying Tengu has no effect on players, including Weylyn (it's just to make him sweat); however, anytime a Tengu is slain by Yorimatsu, increase the Tally Counter.

Ancestral Weapons: When the Tengu Daimyo is encountered, instruct Weylyn (if present) that his weapon may call "Crit" damage versus the Daimyo. If a player is wielding Yorimatsu's Katana, instruct them that they may call "Crit" damage versus the Daimyo.

Yorimatsu's Katana: Yorimatsu's Katana is a Q3 Two-Handed Weapon with the following effects: "Use Heavy Weapon", "Versatile Weapon", and "Extremely Light Construction" (players may call any melee trigger effect they possess through the katana). The katana will be broken during the battle with the Daimyo and be rendered useless afterwards.

Yorimatsu: Yorimatsu is an old Empyrean, he is the only surviving samurai from the ancient group who defeated the HanatakaTengu. He has slain enough Tengu since then that his Ancestral Katana is nearly fully corrupted. During the course of the adventure, anytime a Tengu is slain my Yorimatsu, increase the Tally Counter. If the Tally Counter reaches 50, Yorimatsu will be corrupted (leading to an alternate scene).

Tengu Daimyo: While the lesser Tengu can be dispatched through normal means, the Tengu Daimyo is a more powerful spirit. It can only be slain by one of the Vonstonjin Ancestral Weapons created to do so. The NPC Yorimatsu has one, which he can use (if uncorrupted), or can be taken from him (if corrupted) - in addition, the player Yeou Weylyn has a Vostonjin Ancestral Weapon (if present).

Reference (Yorimatsu): Yorimatsu is named after Minamoto no Yorimasa (源 頼政) (1106–1180), a prominent Japanese poet who served under eight emperors in his career. He was also a warrior, and possibly the first to commit ritual suicide.

1.1 - A growing darkness / Draws out the Empyrean / The moment to strike

Narrative
Leaving Jastrey and making way for the span, you soon find yourself on the shore near the village of Tsuri. You can see the wooden palisade the remaining villagers have built, and it seems your approach has been noticed, as you hear a bell sounding from the village. A slight rustling of feathers is the only warning you get as several Tengu suddenly appear from nowhere!

[AFTER FIRST COMBAT:]
Dispatching the Tengu, you quickly make your way into the village. Several villagers are waiting near the palisade in ambush, but hold their attack when you enter. Several stepping forward to speak with you.
Scene Notes
SET TALLY COUNTER TO ZERO. BEGIN STOPWATCH.

COMBAT: Tengu (1 wave)

After dispatching the Tengu scouts, players may enter the village with little trouble. The villagers are wary of outsiders, but don't think the players are a ruse by the Tengu. They will ask the players for assistance when the Tengu return. After RP starts to wind down, or if the party splits up, initiate combat (while allowing the split to continue to scene 2.1).

VILLAGERS - RP NOTES:
Remark about the players' dress/appearance.
Ask the players where they are from.
Ask for assistance in fighting the Tengu.
{IF KITSUNE} Remark that they must not be with the Tengu- as the two have never gotten along.
{ASK ABOUT YORIMATSU} Yorimatsu isn't here. Last anyone saw him he was heading to the graveyard.

IF PLAYERS WANT TO LOOK FOR YORIMATSU: Allow players who want to look for Yorimatsu to continue to scene 2.1. Anyone who stays behind with the villagers can have combat in the meantime.

COMBAT: Tengu, Villagers (allies)

Once the players return from Scene 2.1 (or if they skip Scene 2.1), proceed to Scene 3.1.
Narrative Effects
Commune Corpse (Tengu; Easy): The Tengu mostly responds with loud, grating cawing sounds.
Commune Spirit (Tengu; Hard): The Tengu mostly responds with loud, grating cawing sounds. What is actual language is Vostonjin, and by the tone not friendly.
Explore (Graveyard; Easy): There is an old Empyrean man kneeling in the graveyard.
Insight (Villagers; Easy): They are telling the truth.
Inspect Evil (Tengu; Very Easy): Yes.
Inspect Magic (Tengu; Very Easy): Yes.
Locate ([Old Empyrean/Yorimatsu]; Easy): Yorimatsu is in the graveyard.

2.1 - A now empty grave / An ancestral Katana / A promise broken (OPTIONAL)

Narrative
As you enter the graveyard, you see an old empyrean, kneeling before a gravestone. They do not move as you approach.
Scene Notes
Yorimatsu has unearthed his ancestral weapon, which he buried here years ago. He will only respond to players once they address him.

YORIMATSU - RP NOTES:
You are Yorimatsu.
You buried your ancestral katana here centuries ago, and vowed not to wield it again.
The Tengu have obviously come for you.
You've tried to help fight them off, but they still persist; perhaps by taking up your katana again you can at least save the village.
You will not allow anyone else to wield your katana.

COMPETITIVE ACTION: Attacking Yorimatsu is a competitive action. If slain, the player may take his katana (see Story Notes for details).

Once RP dies down, Yorimatsu will join the players and return to the village. If the players in Scene 1.1 are still in combat, allow Yorimatsu and the players from Scene 2.1 to join the fight.
Narrative Effects
Inspect Arms (Yorimatsu's Katana; Hard): The katana is easily several centuries old, if not more.
Insight (Yorimatsu; Easy): Yorimatsu speaks the truth.
Inspect Evil (Yorimatsu; Very Easy): Yorimatsu is not evil.
Inspect Evil (Yorimatsu's Katana; Very Easy): The katana is extremely evil.
Inspect Magic (Yorimatsu's Katana; Very Hard): FAIL: The katana is a powerful magical weapon imbued with offensive magick. PASS: ...which pales in comparison to the binding magicks upon it.

3.1 - Murderous Tengu / Empyrean Samurai / Feathers and fury

Narrative
Dispatching the Tengu in the village, the bell has stopped sounding. Looking to the palisade, you see more Tengu have arrived! As they charge at the villagers, there's a sudden rush of wind - [an old empyrean/Yorimatsu], katana drawn, leaves a wake of fading shadows and feathers as he slays the Tengu leading the charge. The villagers flee farther into Tsuri as the Tengu turn their attention to you!
Scene Notes
This should be a prolonged combat, which composes the bulk of the adventure. Periodically, have some monsters spawn in as unarmed villagers, fleeing from the Tengu. Yorimatsu will fight the Tengu, along with the party, but paying particular attention to saving the villagers. He will go so far as to call for healing, or "Carry" villagers to a healer, if he can. Add breaks within the combat as necessary, but keep the stopwatch running.

ANNOUNCE: Yorimatsu is an ally!
ANNOUNCE: Fleeing villagers are allies!
COMBAT: Tengu (a lot), Yorimatsu (ally), villagers (allies)
CONTINUOUS COMBAT: Monsters should return to the Narrator upon death; most will respawn as Tengu, though periodically the Narrator may send in several villagers.

IF YORIMATSU SLAYS 50 TENGU: Proceed to Scene 3.2.
IF 30 MINUTES HAVE PASSED: Proceed to Scene 3.3A.

3.2 - Avoiding the fight / Ancestral blade corrupted / Possessed Samurai (OPTIONAL)

Narrative
Seemingly without number, the Tengu continue their assault; charging through the still dissipating shadows of their fallen flockmates. [The old empyrean's/Yorimatsu's] advanced age belies his abilities as a katanasman, slaying countless Tengu in defense of the village. As he strikes down more, you lose sight of him in the haze of their shadow. As the shadows dissipate, you see him down on one knee.
Before you can assist him, you notice his ancestral blade has turned black. Raven feathered wings burst from his back; as he lifts his gaze, his face has turned an red, and his nose has grown unnaturally long. The Tengu rally around him as he turns on the villagers and you!
Scene Notes
Yorimatsu has slain too many Tengu, his ancestral weapon unable to contain them any longer, they have possessed him!

ANNOUNCE: Corrupted Yorimatsu is an EPIC MONSTER!
COMBAT: Yorimatsu (EPIC), Tengu
REINFORCE: Tengu respawn whenever Yorimatsu refreshes.

Once Yorimatsu is defeated, the players can pick up his katana. They may revive Yorimatsu if they choose to. If revived, Yorimatsu will not fight in later scenes and will allow a player to wield his katana.

Then proceed to Scene 3.3B.

3.3A - Tengu Daimyo comes / Demanding the ancient sword / To free his master (YORIMATSU UNCORRUPTED)

Narrative
As you dispatch the last of the Tengu you hear the flapping of more wings. Another Tengu, dressed in the armor of a Daimyo, stands at the gate.

[SURRENDER SWORD:]
The Daimyo takes the ancient katana and breaks it in half! The katana returns to its original color as the blackness from the blade manifests as a shadow over the village before it and the Daimyo disappear...

[ONSET OF COMBAT:]
The Tengu Daimyo flaps it's wings, and as it does you hear flapping from all around you! You're surrounded by Tengu Daimyo!

[WEYLYN SLAYS:]
As Weylyn slays the Daimyo with his naginata, its shadow enters the blade, which starts to darken. While Weylyn siphons off most of the Daimyo's shadow, some still reaches [the old empyrean's/Yorimatsu's] katana, which starts to darken further, but then breaks! The katana returns to its original color as the blackness from the blade manifests as a shadow over the village before it disappears...
Scene Notes
The Tengu Daimyo doesn't have much to say, aside from demanding that the party surrender Yorimatsu's Katana (in Vostonjin). Yorimatsu will not surrender his katana and will attempt to keep the players from handing it over.

COMPETITIVE ACTION: Attacking Yorimatsu is a competitive action. If slain, the player may take his katana (see Story Notes for details).
IF THE PLAYERS ACTUALLY COMPLY: Read the 2nd Narration and proceed to Scene 3.4.
OTHERWISE: When combat is about to begin, read the 3rd Narration.

During combat, the Tengu Daimyo will conjure illusions of itself. Except as outlined below, the duplicates are the same as the Daimyo. PRE-PLAN WITH YOUR MONSTERS WHO WILL BE THE REAL DAIMYO EACH REFRESH.
DAIMYO: The Daimyo is "Immune Non-Crit Damage", per it's license. Inform the wielder of Yorimatsu's Katana, and Weylyn (if present), that they may call "Crit vs Tengu" for this scene. The Daimyo does not take any other damage type as "Crit" damage.
ILLUSION DAIMYO: The Illusions only "Reduce Non-Crit Damage". The Illusions are "Crit by Prime" as normal. THE ILLUSIONS ARE NOT EPIC MONSTERS! When SLAIN the Illusions "Burst 2 Drain".
ANNOUNCE: The Tengu Daimyo is an Epic Monster!
ANNOUNCE: The Tengu Daimyo conjures Illusions!
COMBAT: Daimyo (EPIC), Illusions
