Triggers

Triggers determine how combat abilities are performed and who they affect. The level of the overall ability is adjusted by the level of the trigger; the more restrictive the trigger, the lower the level of the ability, allowing it to be acquired earlier and at lower cost.

Avenging (-1)

You trigger an Avenging ability immediately after being attacked. The attack must strike you, but you may block, counter, or apply immunity normally. You deliver the effect by swinging a weapon at the attacker.

Dust (-1)

You trigger a Dust ability just like a Supply ability. However, you must have the Use Dust passive ability.

Initiative (-1)

You trigger an Initiative ability by attacking the intended target with any melee or ranged weapon before you've been hit. If you do not have the passive ability to use the weapon or it is Ruined, you cannot use the ability. After you're hit, you must rest or use a Haste effect before you can use an Initiative ability again.

You trigger a Light Weapon ability by attacking the intended target with a light weapon. Light weapons cannot be shorter than the distance between your wrist and elbow or longer than the distance between your fingertip and shoulder, though certain abilities may allow you to treat other weapons as light. If you do not have the ability to use the weapon or it is Ruined, you cannot use the ability.

Magic (1)

Ritual (-2)

You trigger a Ritual ability just like a Spell ability. Instead of speaking an incantation, however, you must remain stationary and chant for one minute. If you move or get hit while chanting, the ability is interrupted but not expended. Ritual abilities may not be used to counter.

Self (0)

You do not need to do anything special to trigger a Self ability. When you use it, it affects you.

Instead of speaking an incantation, however, you use a free hand and count out tracing a symbol in the air or on a surface three times (e.g., "Signing 1, signing 2, signing 3"). Sign abilities can be used while Muted, but not with an arm that is Maimed.

Slay (-2)

You trigger a Slay ability by slaying another character or subduing them with Critical Damage. When you use it, it affects you. You may only trigger one Slay ability at a time, and may not trigger a Slay ability from a character who is already slain. Slay abilities may not be used to counter.

You trigger a Sneak Attack ability by attacking the intended target from behind with a light weapon. Light weapons cannot be shorter than the distance between your wrist and elbow or longer than the distance between your fingertip and shoulder, though certain abilities may allow you to treat other weapons as light. If you do not have the ability to use the weapon or it is Ruined, you cannot use the ability.

Spell (-1)

You trigger a Spell ability by speaking an incantation. Incantations must be at least nine syllables in length, distinguishable from normal speech, and related to the nature of the effect. If you are hit while speaking the incantation, the ability is interrupted but not expended. If you are Muted, you cannot use the ability. Once the ability is triggered, you deliver the effect by throwing a packet at the intended target. If the effect is beneficial, you may also deliver the effect through touch or have it affect yourself.

Spoken (-1)

You trigger a Spoken ability by speaking. The statement must be at least nine syllables in length and related to the nature of the effect. If you are hit while speaking, the ability is interrupted but not expended. If you are Muted, you cannot use the ability. Once the ability is triggered, you deliver the effect by swinging a weapon at the intended target. If the effect is beneficial, you may also deliver the effect through touch or have it affect yourself.

Subdued (3)

You trigger a Subdued ability just like a Self ability, except you may do so after you have been subdued.

You must pantomime using the item with a free hand and count out the activity three times (e.g., to drink a potion, you might say, "Drinking 1, drinking 2, drinking 3"). If you are hit while counting, the ability is interrupted but not expended. Once the ability is triggered, you deliver the effect by throwing a packet or swinging a weapon at the intended target.
