Triggers

Triggers determine how combat abilities are performed and who they affect. The level of the overall ability is adjusted by the level of the trigger; the more restrictive the trigger, the lower the level of the ability, allowing it to be acquired earlier and at lower cost.

You trigger an Avenging ability immediately after being attacked. The attack must strike you, but you may Block, Counter, or declare Immunity normally. You deliver the effect by swinging a Weapon at the attacker. If you do not have the Proficiency to use the Weapon, it is Ruined, or the arm wielding it is Maimed, you cannot use the ability.

You must be at half Hits (rounded down) to trigger a Bloodied ability. When you use it, it affects you.

Sign abilities can be used while Muted, but not with an arm that is Maimed.

Slay (-2)

You trigger a Slay ability by slaying another character or subduing them with Critical Damage. When you use it, it affects you. You may only trigger one Slay ability at a time, and may not trigger a Slay ability from a character who is already slain. Slay abilities may not be used to counter.

You trigger a Sneak Attack ability by attacking the intended target from behind with a Light Weapon. If you do not have the Proficiency to use the Weapon, it is Ruined, or the arm wielding it is Maimed, you cannot use the ability.

Spell (-1)

You trigger a Spell ability by speaking an incantation. Incantations must be at least nine syllables in length, distinguishable from normal speech, and related to the nature of the effect. If you are hit while speaking the incantation, the ability is interrupted but not expended. If you are Muted, you cannot use the ability.
