The sun beat down on the road and Odelia fanned herself with the piece of parchment in her hands before deciding that a break in the shade was in order.
"And back on this shard again," she said aloud to herself as she set down her traveling pack in the shade of an oak tree. "Do all roads lead to Jastrey?" Sitting down next to her gear, the cartographer took a few sips from her water skin, then retrieved her quill, putting it to her parchment..
...I have yet to nail down any rhyme or reason to the pattern of the spans. While some spans seem constant, or at least long lasting, others come and go as if the Immortals were playing a great game and we are but the pawns. What would happen to one traversing a span in it's moment of change? Does the span itself move to a different shard? Or does it fade away, leaving any travelers lost to the void? I shudder to think of that possibility as I recall tales of travelers never reaching their destinations...
Odelia sat for a few more moments with her quill poised, lost in contemplations about the spans and the void.
A distant roll of thunder in the hot afternoon brought her mind back to the present. The leaves on the trees showed their undersides as a soft breeze grew slightly stronger. The cartographer shook her her head and returned the quill to her map case. "Best get to town in case a storm's going to roll through..." she muttered, collecting her traveling gear once more and trudging along the road, heading toward the town of Jastrey.
