Hey I'm new to LARPing and I would like to know if fiberglass cores for weapons are accepted in this one. I've done a lot of research and they have high praise for durability and I would like to make one if I can.

Hello!  I'm glad to see that you're interested in coming out to Shards of Orn!  Fiberglass cores are allowed here provided they are built appropriately.  One thing to point out would be the upcoming change to weapon lengths next season.

Taken from a post on mechanics:

  • Unarmed boffer props must be at least as long as the distance between your elbow and your wrist, but no longer than your elbow to your fingertip.
  • Light weapons include anything up to the distance between your shoulder to your fingertip. This was 28 inches on me.
  • Medium weapons include anything longer than light and up to the distance between your opposite shoulder and your fingertip.
  • Heavy weapons include anything longer than medium and up to the distance from one fingertip to the other.

A very basic instructional page can be found on the Orn website here Assemble Your Props.

There are, of course, many other instructions that can be found online.  Also, you are not required to bring a weapon for your first game - you are allowed to borrow one from the game for that event.  You are required to have one by the second game, and with the large amount of time before the next event, it would be a good time to go ahead and craft one anyway.  There are plenty of people here who create weapons, so feel free to ask around for tips/help in the tavern chat if you need it.  We're all a friendly bunch here!

I'm looking forward to meeting you in the Spring!  Until then, welcome!

Thank you very much. Just to clarify the padding for fiberglass will follow the same rules of a pvc pipe correct? And if I make a rapier will it fit the setting?

Generally, the fiberglass cores would require a denser foam than what a lot of standard PVC boffers will use (often people use pipe insulation).  Polyetheline foams are used, though you could reinforce the core with something even tougher, like EVA foam (definitely make sure you use a less dense foam on top of this if you decide to go this route).

Rapiers are fine, however, a lot of weapons will not pass for thrusting.  It is generally better, especially at first, to make the design you like, but expect to use the edge of the weapon for attacking rather than the tip.

Greetings, Do you allow pre-purchased (Mass Produced) Latex Weapons?

We do allow these, however, all weapons must pass length and safety inspections.  A few details on that:

Calimacil often does not pass.  Especially their older weapons.  The foam chemistry was just too hard.
Altelier Nemesis often does pass, as well as things from Epic Armory and the like.

When in doubt - ask someone here first (and link it).  More often than not, someone will have seen it before and know if it would be allowed or not.

Thank you. I tend to fight with a Pole Arm or Claw Length Weapons (Pugilist)... :)
