Hey Orn!
I?ve been wandering around your site for a while and just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I?ve played a few other games, but I just moved to the Raleigh area and found your game through a Facebook ad (Facebook PPC targets the right people I guess). I?m really impressed so far by the originality of the rules and character customization. I?ll probably make it to the June event barring unforeseen circumstances.
Questions! (I?ll probably have tons more, but this is what I can come up with for now)
Affinities- I saw that when you multiclass a character, affinities don?t stack, but do you use the affinities for your highest level class or the highest affinity? I.E. Druid 2/Warrior 1 purchasing armored combat= 20% reduction from Druid or 40% reduction from warrior? Also, if you pick up a new class later, is the affinity retroactive, making skills you already purchased cheaper?
Tox- Is the tox tagline just a damage tagline or is there a poison effect as well (Sick for 1 minute or whatever)?
Intensity- I noticed intensity mentioned in a bunch of the skills, and wasn?t quite sure how that worked. Is it something you collect or a pool you start with or something else?
Thanks for the help!
Bravo! All of your answers were spot on and very well put. I particularly like the intensity answer. Truly impressive for a player that has only been to a single event. You know more than me on this stuff now, and I've been playing for a year and a half!
The only thing I can weigh in on for the retroactive reapplication of the skill points is, yes. Every rules change we do that involves cost of skill points changes everything on the site. So if Brutality becomes cheaper in the future, and it won?t, everyone would receive free skill points based on the reduced cost. The same applies to a multi classed character.
We have seen a lot of what we call level dips. Players want a skill or set of skills and take a class dip to acquire those skills for a lesser skill point cost. It?s balanced because you will not get the higher level abilities till you have reached the appropriate level of the class to do them.
For example: If I was to play a wizard but wanted to carry a shield I might take a level dip into disciple so that I?m not paying out the nose to get armored combat 2. The nice thing about the level dip in disciple is the heal 5 per encounter it grants me. On the other hand I will not get slay till I reach wizard level 10. So I?ll have to be character level 11. Hence the balance. A wizard in chain mail and a shield but can?t kill you outright till level 11.
Multi-classing is just one of the many options players have in the Shards of Orn. We do hope to see you in June, and if you have any further questions feel free to ask.
Just spoke to Nick for a clarification of your particular multi-class question:
Yes, if you were to do Druid2 and as your 3rd level pick up one in Warrior, the points that you spent in druid that you gained affinity in as a warrior should be refunded. Not to mention, there is a 4 game respend on all of your points anyway, and that should be able to get you to level 4 total before you have to worry about all your base skills and what sort of affinities you need to be looking at if you're trying to tweak out all the finer details of where you want your character to go.
First off, welcome. Second off, it looks like Nick and Scott beat me to the punch, but here's my recap:
- You use the best affinities of the classes you have, not just the affinities of the highest-level class. Thus, you can pick up one level in warrior and pay what a warrior of your race pays for Weapon Specialization even if the rest of your levels are, say, wizard. A lot of people like to level dip into another class for this very reason.
- Affinities apply retroactively. You get skill points back if your affinities improve as a result of multiclassing.
- Tox is just a damage type. It describes how it is you're being hurt. For most characters, there are no additional effects, although some monsters that are especially susceptible to Tox damage might suffer threshold effects when hit by it. If you want poisons that do other sorts of things, those are available as well, but they use an effect tagline (e.g., Sleep, Slay, etc.) instead of a damage tagline.
- Intensity is a factor in how actions are built. An action may have the Damage effect component at an Intensity of 6, indicating that the action does 30 damage. These are built into your actions, so, unless you plan on building new actions, it's not usually something you have to worry about.
Thanks for the answers guys. You've been a big help. But, as promised, I've thought of some more questions as I peruse.
Verbals- Are there set verbals for every spell or are they created by the character?
Cabin protections- Is there a way of protecting your cabin while you're sleeping or do you need to be a light sleeper?
Thanks again for the responses.

Verbals are not set and can be customized to your liking. The only requirements are that they be a minimum of seven syllables in length and distinguishable from casual speech. You don't even have to use the spell name in the verbal if you don't want, since the overall effect is communicated in the tagline that follows.
The cabin defense system has been on the back burner for awhile now. When it's complete, it will involve cabin guardians, traps, locks, and even alarms. In general, however, we tend to be more casual than other LARPs, so sleeping in safety hasn't been a concern thus far.
Newbie here. First off, Hi, my name is Eddie and I am a WoW addict. lol. I heard about LARP and decided to do some googling and came across this site. The whole idea sounds really fun, i just have one, maybe dumb, question about weapons. I've seen the round, odd looking boffers, and I have also seen the sweet looking ones at safesmith. My question is, I already happen to have a foam sword made by Nerf. The sword can be seen here http://www.hasbro.com/nerf/en_US/shop/details.cfm?guid=E2638A92-19B9-F369-D96B-554EAEBE31F2&product_id=25224&src=endeca. They also make a battle axe. I was wondering if these would be usable in play with your group. I have been hit with one several times and they seem relatively safe, but I wanted to get the word from the top.
I would say bring the weapon with you and let the marshalls inspect it at the event. without seeing it they wont be able to tell if it will pass or not. If it doesnt pass inspection you may be able to bum an extra from someone or get a loaner from npc camp. hope to meet you soon!
Hi everyone. I'm Shell's (Taklinn, the dwarf's) wife. I am creating a faerie character and was wondering if I would be able to get any armor credit for this outfit. The skirt and top are both suede leather.

Thanks a bunch!
Thad/Nick, please feel free to correct me in any of the following should I be wrong:
Affinities: Take the highest affinity for class/race combo of any of your classes, to my knowledge, class affinities don't or shouldn't stack. In the druid2/warrior1 scenario, you'd take the 40% affinity from the warrior and apply it with any bonus your race gives you as well, ignore the druids lesser affinity for this skill.
I'd have to differ to Nick/Thad about retro skills and points spending, I'm sure its mentioned somewhere, but I've never seen it in print.
Tox at the moment is a damage tagline like fire/ice/spell, there are thresholds and resists for taglines, so if you deliver an attack for say 50 tox and the creature has a tox threshold, something extra will happen to the creature.
Consider intensity to be how effective a skill is, like a light spell of intensity 1 would be enough to light a small area around you, say a candle, and intensity 10 would be a bonfire or something that would effectively light a much bigger area.
Same theory applies to strikes, camouflage and blend effects, etc. The higher the intensity, the more effective, and by design, the more difficult the ability is to perform and the higher the action rating associated with the skill.
If you have any other questions, I spend quite a bit of time in chat while I'm at work, feel free to stop by and ask away. I'll answer everything to the best of my ability, and differ to the owners when I'm not exactly sure. Hope to see you at the June event!
