Hi, there! My two roomies and I are in the initial phases of preparing to dip our toes into Orn! I just figured it'd be nice to introduce myself and such, and I saw a few other 'newbie, here!' posts, so I figured this might be the place to do it!
So hello! :D
I'm currently working on getting some basic costuming stuff together, but I was wondering -- I know I read that you have to take the introduction adventure and such, but I was curious if you have to make a character for that, or if it's possible to spend your first event 100% on monster/den/npc duty, to kinda feel things out?
Any insights on that!? Thanks if so! :D
And if you want to get a feel for the crowd as well as fellow newbs we are holding a preseason sparring event that's totally free. It'll give you a chance to meet some people as well the same time get a feel for how things will be for events. Maybe even some ideas for costuming and back stories.
Hey guys. To answer your question, while it is allowed, I would strongly encourage you to create a character and play as a PC your first time out. The reasons for this are discussed at length under "Can I come as a spectator or monster so I can get an idea of what it's like before I play?" in the FAQ.
Hey there! I'm one of Jasons roommates. Thought I'd pop by and say hello! Looking forward to my first event as well. :)
Question - should I work on assembling weaponry of my own (probably a saucy boffer at this point in time), or would it be possible to borrow something for my first event?
Safe travels!
If you want to work on your own props, that's just fine. Unless things have recently changed, new players are allowed to borrow a weapon on their first event, so don't feel like you need to rush and pop something out at the last minute. You can read more about getting ready for your first game in the Game Guide, and the part on borrowing a weapon is located in the Pack Your Bags section of the Game Guide. Let us know if you need any more help!
Hi guys welcome to orn. To answer a couple of questions, it is usually better to make a character to play your first time out. Learning hte system is simple, and it is easier to handle a first level character sheet than a higher level one and have to learn it all at once.
As for weapons, I think it is advised to borrow a weapon if you are thinking to build your own. many times people will build one for their frist event and it will not pass the safety checks. Dont want you to feel discouraged by this, but by using loaner weapons you can see how they are done before you invest time and money into the project. If you are going the latex weapon route, some calimacil weapons in the past have not passed because they were too hard.
As for maces and morning stars, they should be fine to use, provided they are built safely. for the padding of the striking surface, couch cushion/open cell foam is really vital here. Getting the striking surface attached will be your largest barrier of entry and probably be what would disqualify it for safety reasons. Note that this is true for axes and warhammers as well. Also remember that flails are NOT approved, as they can cause serious safety concerns with entanglement and tripping hazards. Also refer to the above paragraph about considering just using a loaner your first event so that you can see what is outlined here and possible build solutions to apply to your first weapons build.
Welcome to Orn once again guys and I will be seeing you in April for your New Player Orientation.
Hi Jason! I'm going to be larping with Orn for the first time this April too. I don't know for certain what the answers to your questions are, but some of the veterans here do frequent the chat box. You can always try asking there if you don't get an answer in this thread.
